Frequently Asked Questions
How long do I have to dispute a credit card charge?
Under the Fair Credit Billing Act (FCBA), you generally must send a written billing-error dispute within 60 days after the first statement containing the error was sent to you. Send it to the issuer's billing-inquiries address, which is often different from the payment address.
Do I have to pay a charge while it is being disputed?
You are not required to pay the disputed amount, or finance charges on it, while the issuer investigates a properly filed FCBA dispute. You must still pay the undisputed portion of your bill.
What counts as a billing error under the FCBA?
Unauthorized charges, charges with the wrong amount or date, charges for goods or services you did not accept or that were not delivered as agreed, math errors, and statements sent to the wrong address, among others.
What is the difference between a dispute letter and a chargeback?
A chargeback is typically initiated through your issuer's online process under card-network rules, while a written FCBA dispute letter preserves your formal legal rights under federal law. For larger amounts, sending the written letter is the safer route.
