Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do about an unauthorized bank transaction?

Report it to your bank as soon as you notice it, by phone first, then in writing. Under the Electronic Fund Transfer Act (Regulation E), your liability for unauthorized electronic transfers is limited when you report promptly, and it can increase the longer you wait.

How long do I have to report an unauthorized transaction?

For electronic transfers, notifying your bank within 60 days of the statement showing the error preserves your Regulation E protections. Reporting a lost or stolen card within two business days limits your liability to $50.

How long does the bank have to investigate?

Generally 10 business days from receiving your notice (20 for new accounts). The bank can take up to 45 days if it provisionally credits your account for the disputed amount while it investigates.

Will I get my money back?

If the bank's investigation confirms the transaction was unauthorized, it must correct the error, including refunding the amount and any related fees or interest. If it denies the claim, it must give you a written explanation and you may request the documents it relied on.
